New Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has confirmed that Ezra Mam will be retained by the club, despite recent charges laid by the Queensland Police.
Mam has been charged with drug-driving following a head-on collision. He is accused of failing a roadside drug test after a two-vehicle crash at Bardon, in Brisbane's inner west, about 5.20pm on October 18.
When asked on 4BC Radio whether Mam had played his last game for the Broncos, Maguire was adamant.
"No he hasn't... we're working through with the organisation the whole situation, we need to make sure we are slow about our decisions, because we see everything for what it is," Maguire said.
"Obviously it's a big incident and it's not taken lightly, but Ezra's now working on himself, he's making sure that he's going through his process, and we need to connect with everyone that's been in that accident.
"As an organisation, we've got to take the incident, respect it, and make sure that we grow from that, because that's the last thing we want to be around is something like that."
The Broncos will now wait to see what the NRL does, with a lengthy ban from the playing field expected for Mam.
"We've got to go through the process," Maguire said.
"Obviously, the charges [have] come out, so he's still currently working on himself in the space that he's at, and then then he goes to the NRL and the NRL and the Broncos and Dave [Donaghy] will deal with that situation.
"I'm not trying to work out what that will be, that will be what it will be. We need to work through making sure that we change where we've been as a club, use this moment in time to improve from where we've been and build the culture what we want to be."
