There was no podium finish for India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom in Rio, after she failed to make a single clean & jerk lift in the women's 48kg weightlifting event.

Chanu, 21, lifted 82kg at her second attempt in snatch, but faltered in her third while trying for 84kg. In clean & jerk, she was unsuccessful in her first attempt at 104kg, and desperately trying to vault into a medal spot, she raised the weights to 106kg, though it was to no avail. As a result, Chanu, who won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, finished outside the top 10.

Thailand's Tanasan Sopita bagged the gold medal after lifting 92kg in snatch and 108kg in clean & jerk for a total score of 200. Indonesia's Agustiani Sri Wahyuni took home the silver, while Japan's Miyake Hiromi won bronze.
