American runner Jordan Hasay, who finished third among women at last year's Boston Marathon and was seen as a contender this year, announced on Twitter that she has withdrawn from tomorrow's race because of a foot injury.
"It is with deep regret that I have to withdraw from tomorrow's Boston Marathon," the 26-year-old said in a statement. "Despite my team working around the clock to give me every chance to make the starting line, on this occasion it will not be possible. I wish my fellow competitors and everyone taking part the very best of luck, and I look forward to toeing the line with them next year and for many years after that."
Hasay has been recovering from plantar fasciitis. Hasay's doctors and team decided to withdraw from the marathon to continue her recovery.
Hasay crushed the American record for a marathon debut by almost three minutes at Boston last year. She finished in 2:23:00.
An American woman hasn't won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen Rainsberger in 1985.
