Andy Murray (quad) withdraws from Tokyo Olympics singles tennis tournament, remains in doubles

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the men's singles tennis tournament at the Tokyo Olympics because of a quad strain.

The two-time Olympic gold-medal winner was hoping to defend his title at Tokyo 2020, but he has decided to prioritize the men's doubles tournament alongside Joe Salisbury.

The announcement came prior to his previously scheduled opening-round match against Felix Auger-Aliassime on Sunday. Murray was replaced by Australia's Max Purcell.

A statement from Team Great Britain said Murray's decision "followed consultation with medical staff in relation to a quad strain."

"I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe," Murray said.

Murray and Salisbury are through to the second round of the men's doubles after an impressive opening-round victory (6-3, 6-2) over No. 2-seeded Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut on Saturday.

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, reached the third round of Wimbledon this month as he continued his comeback from hip and groin trouble. Murray won the gold medal in men's singles at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, and he also won silver in the mixed doubles in 2012 alongside Laura Robson.
