Press, Toone keep Man United's title hopes alive vs. Everton
USWNT's Christen Press was on target as Manchester United beat Everton 2-0 in the Women's Super League on Sunday.
It was a mixture of old and young talent on the pitch that secured United the victory with 21-year-old Ella Toone also scoring.
The result keeps United in second place, level on points with Chelsea who beat Tottenham earlier in the day.
However, United have a game in hand over the London side and would need them to drop points to make a title challenge -- a tall order with Chelsea on a record-breaking unbeaten run of 33 matches in the WSL.
Toone opened the scoring after just nine minutes when Leah Galton's cross was pushed away by Sandy Maciver. She rushed onto the ball and hit it into the net from close range.
Press, who decided not to travel to the USWNT's January camp, had several good chances throughout the first half to double United's lead and eventually converted three minutes before half-time.
Everton failed to clear the ball and Press ran onto it. Despite falling as she got her shot away, Press managed to direct it into the bottom corner of Maciver's goal.
Willie Kirk's side improved in the second half but were unable to pull a consolation goal back.
Press was substituted on 80 minutes for Lauren James.
United manager Casey Stoney confirmed on Friday that USWNT teammate Tobin Heath will be out for 10-12 weeks with an ankle injury, ruling her out of contention for the SheBelieves Cup in February.
Elsewhere, Rose Lavelle was also on the scoresheet as she helped Manchester City to a 4-0 win over West Ham.
