Inter Milan capitalised on slip-ups from their rivals as they moved top of Serie A with a 2-1 win at Genoa.

Captain Lautaro Martínez set up Yann Bisseck to score an early opener before getting the second himself in the 38th minute.

Vitinha got Genoa back into it midway through the second half, but Inter hung for a win that moves them top by a single point after AC Milan were held to a 2-2 draw by Sassuolo and Napoli were beaten 1-0 by Udinese.

Inter needed only six minutes to get their noses in front at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Martinez chased down what looked like being a lost cause and pulled the ball back for Bisseck, who stepped inside before surprising Nicola Leali with a low shot.

Petar Sucic somewhat optimistically appealed for a penalty after going down in a tangle with Alessandro Marcandalli, but the referee's lack of interest did not matter as Inter were 2-0 up moments later regardless.

Martinez had the strength to shrug off two defenders before firing a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Leali.

Marcandalli blocked another Martinez strike in first-half stoppage time and Inter's captain was again denied in the second half.

Inter's inability to add a decisive third allowed Genoa to get back into it when Vitinha escaped the attentions of Manuel Akanji before beating Yann Sommer in the 68th minute.

Christian Chivu reshuffled his pack as Inter began to feel the nerves, but Sommer kept out Albert Gronbaek's 80th minute free-kick and that was as close as the hosts went to an equaliser.
