Matt Ritchie goal for Bournemouth 'sublime,' says manager Eddie Howe

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe praised Matt Ritchie after the midfielder's stunning long-range goal secured the club's first-ever home win in the top division.

The Cherries needed only nine minutes to score the goals that gave them a 2-0 win, with Ritchie's effort crowning an excellent all-round team performance.

Callum Wilson scored his fifth in six games to give them an early lead, but then came the moment of the match and one of the goals of the season so far.

A Charlie Daniels corner was headed clear to Ritchie who, 25 yards out, took it down on his chest and hammered a shot high into the Sunderland net.

And Howe told the BBC: "It was a fantastic strike from Matt Ritchie. He set himself up, but I don't think anyone saw the finish coming. It was sublime."

He also praised Wilson, saying: "He has all the attributes that a modern-day striker needs.

"He is very quick -- he did really well today for the first goal to show strength and the ability to roll the defender in a tight situation and it was a great finish -- and he is full of confidence.

"I think it is great that we are playing at this level and our players are being appreciated and talked about, and I'd like nothing more than to see Callum go on and make England appearances.

"I think his potential is limitless -- he is strong, quick and a good finisher. He is developing all aspects of his game all the time."

Howe said a strong home record would be vital to Bournemouth's chances of staying in the Premier League.

He added: "I think today was a really important day for us.

"Our home form, every season, is hugely important. You need to be confident and home and deliver good performances in front of your own crowd and get points, and today goes a long way to giving the players a boost."
