Hugo Gonzalez among five players to watch in the Liga MX semifinals

We are now down to just four teams in the Liga MX playoffs.

Will America be able to overcome the highly-talented Monterrey? Will Pachuca's Mexican youngsters help carry them past Leon? We will have to wait and see after each team takes part in a two-legged series this week for a spot in the final.

Keeping the upcoming four matches in mind, let's take a look at five players to watch during the semifinals of the Liguilla:

1. Hugo Gonzalez, GK, Club America

After taking over the starting spot in goals from Moises Munoz, Gonzalez has stepped up for Las Aguilas and helped carry the team to a spot in the semifinals. The 25-year-old has emerged as a key figure for the club, but will now face a Monterrey side that recently scored three times against him in the Estadio Azteca during a 3-3 draw on April 30.

Although there is plenty to say about America's noteworthy attack, the young goalkeeper will be the most important figure against the likes of Los Rayados' best. Rogelio Funes Mori, Edwin Cardona, Carlos Sanchez and Dorlan Pabon all have numerous goals to their names and have the abilities to easily sneak one past the goalkeeper.

Monterrey will be hungry for goals and will test Gonzalez during Wednesday's first leg in Mexico City and Saturday's second leg in Monterrey.

Against Los Rayados, Gonzalez will have little room for mistakes.

2. Dorlan Pabon, FW, Monterrey

With eight goals and six assists, Pabon has looked like the most significant member of Monterrey's attack. In his last seven games alone, the Colombian has amassed five goals and two assists.

After remaining scoreless in the recent 2-1 loss to Tigres last week in the second leg of the quarterfinals, Pabon will look to compensate for the poor result and regain his momentum. If the Colombian once again takes charge of Monterrey's attack, Los Rayados will be sure to come out of the gates flying this Wednesday in the Estadio Azteca. There will also be pressure on the first-place team to rebound after the loss against their bitter rivals, Tigres.

With Cardona, Sanchez and Funes Mori working alongside him, Pabon appears destined to once again become a key figure for Monterrey. Even if Los Rayados lose the series against America, Pabon will still likely finish the Liguilla with at least one more goal or assist.

3. Rubens Sambueza, MF, Club America

Sambueza is back from his one-game suspension and ready to once again take control of the midfield for America. Although Las Aguilas were able to surpass Chivas in the second leg with a 2-1 result, it was still quite clear that the Argentine was missed in the starting XI.

Now, the 32-year-old has an opportunity to regain control of his midfield and become a source of numerous dangerous passes going forward for America.

Although Monterrey has a wealth of highly-talented names in the roster, the veteran will be unfazed by his opponents and will fight tooth and nail for a good result during both legs. Even when Las Aguilas are struggling, Sambueza is nearly always playing his heart out and leading his team.

That being said, America fans will keep their fingers crossed that he doesn't earn another red card.

4. Oscar Perez, GK, Pachuca

Believe it or not, 43-year-old "Conejo" Perez is still making an impact in the league. On Sunday, Perez was vital for Pachuca with his five saves during the 3-2 win against Santos Laguna in the second leg.

Although the veteran has another year left on his contract, the goalkeeper is likely aware that this might be his last chance to win a title before retirement. With a few of Pachuca's most talented stars like Hirving Lozano, Erick Gutierrez and Rodolfo Pizarro rumored to make a move abroad this season, Perez will need to be at his best during the Liguilla before a potential exodus of talent over the summer.

Pachuca will travel to Leon for the first semifinal leg on Thursday and will then host the second leg at home on Sunday.

5. Elias Hernandez, MF, Leon

Hernandez doesn't rack up goals at the pace that teammate Mauro Boselli does, but the 28-year-old is still one of the most important members of Leon's starting XI. During the Clausura, Hernandez collected six goals and six assists in the tournament for Los Panzas Verdes. With his excellent crosses and scoring abilities, Pachuca will need to be cautious with the distributor.

It's no surprise either that the midfielder was selected as one of the 40 in Mexico's preliminary roster for the Copa America Centenario. Hernandez ultimately missed out on the final 23-man list, but his inclusion in the preliminary call-up says plenty about how Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio is keeping an eye on him.

A good performance from Hernandez during the semifinals might even inspire some feelings of regret from Osorio.
