Back to the drawing board for Dyche as Tom Heaton saves Burnley's blushes

Little was expected from Burnley but their performance against Chelsea in the 3-0 loss on Saturday at Stamford Bridge was poor.

Eden Hazard's early goal ruined Sean Dyche's game plan and making the rest of the match a long battle.

Further goals from Willian and Victor Moses ensured a comfortable win for Chelsea and the Clarets were grateful for an excellent performance from keeper Tom Heaton, who was able to keep the scoreline fairly respectable.

Positives

With Heaton in fine form, Burnley were not embarrassed and it could have easily been five or six had the captain not performed so well in goal.

Aiden O'Neill coped adeptly after being introduced for Steven Defour and he looks to be a potential star in the making, but there were few positives on show for the Clarets and new arrivals are needed before the closure of the transfer window on Wednesday.

Negatives

Burnley's plan was built around keeping Chelsea out for as long as possible and it lay in tatters in the opening 10 minutes when Hazard cut through the defence far too easily.

Dean Marney limping off injured is also a huge concern, and the Clarets ended the game with teenager O'Neill partnering centre-back James Tarkowski in midfield, highlighting the severe lack of depth in the squad.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- Dyche's options are restricted in several areas but he does himself little favours by sticking with his preferred 4-4-2 in an away game against one of the title favourites.

Burnley were rarely in the game, passed the ball poorly and did not defend well. That's a fairly damning combination, with the midfield struggling to get a grip in the match.

Dyche has to find a way to make his team harder to break down away from home, with an ambitious two-man attack of little use if the team are so wasteful in possession.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Tom Heaton, 8 -- Burnley's captain was their star man by a long way, with a string of saves helping to ensure the scoreline did not become embarrassing for his side.

DF Matt Lowton, 5 -- Caught out of position by Hazard's break for the opening goal and never really recovered from that lapse, with the Belgian tormenting him all game.

DF Michael Keane, 5 -- Touted for a possible England call-up after a majestic performance against Liverpool last week, Keane struggled to assert himself on the match and had a bruising afternoon trying to contain Diego Costa.

DF Ben Mee, 5 -- A goal-line clearance showed off his defensive instincts but, like Keane, he found Chelsea's razor-sharp attack tough to handle in a forgettable defensive display all round.

DF Stephen Ward, 5 -- Beaten much too easily by Willian for the second goal; it was an afternoon to forget for both of Burnley's full-backs.

MF Scott Arfield, 5 -- Struggled to get on the ball and a shot that flashed wide was all he produced in attack, so it was no surprise to see him substituted.

MF Dean Marney, 5 -- Not at his best and suffered what looked to be a serious injury, Burnley missed his energy in midfield after his substitution. Marney missed a big chunk of the Clarets' last season through injury and it would be a cruel blow if he was ruled out for a substantial period again.

MF Steven Defour, 5 -- A couple of lapses in concentration could have been costly and the club-record signing was again substituted before the hour-mark, presumably for fitness reasons. It feels odd that he cannot play 90 minutes for Burnley but is apparently fit enough for international duty with Belgium after being recalled by their new coach Roberto Martinez.

MF George Boyd, 4 -- The winger is struggling to justify his continued selection with another performance that featured virtually nothing productive in attack. Running hard is not enough.

FW Sam Vokes, 6 -- Put in a hard shift with very little service on what was a very tough day to be a Burnley forward, but he could have won more in the air.

FW Andre Gray, 6 -- Far too isolated and never had a sniff of goal. The Clarets must get their star striker more involved in games if they are to survive in the Premier League.

Substitutes

MF Aiden O'Neill, 6 -- The talented teenager has been one of the bright sparks in Burnley's season so far and he again impressed in midfield, albeit with the game over as a contest. New signings could push him down the pecking order, however.

MF Johann Berg Gudmundsson, 5 -- A willing runner, but there were precious few signs of creativity from the Iceland international.

MF James Tarkowski, N/R -- A square peg in a round hole in midfield, the defender did as well as could be expected in an unfamiliar role against high-class opposition.
