Bordeaux midfielder Andre Poko has been heavily fined by the club for being photographed smoking a shisha pipe and wearing a Marseille shirt.
The Ligue 1 side said that Poko, 23, was called to a meeting with club president Jean-Louis Triaud on Tuesday morning.
"The president reminded him of his responsibilities following his unspeakable behaviour," a club statement read. "The club cannot accept such a lack of respect for FC Girondins de Bordeaux.
"Andre Poko recognised that he had not realised the significance of his actions and apologised once again for his inappropriate behaviour."
The club said they had decided upon a "severe financial penalty" to encourage the Gabon international to reflect upon his actions and ensure "impeccable behaviour" in future.
The picture of Poko was published on Snapchat in May, hours after Bordeaux lost their final Ligue 1 game of last season 1-0 to Caen.
The 2009 French champions, who finished 11th last term, asked Poko to apologise publicly soon afterwards.
But an irate group of supporters interrupted training on July 1 to make their displeasure clear.
