All eyes may be on Saturday's Clasico at the Bernabeu, but we've looked ahead to see who could be the stars of the future for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
With both clubs boasting an enormous pool of young talent, these are the players who could make names for themselves in the first team by Clasico 2020.
Real Madrid
Vinicius Junior
Junior hasn't even arrived in Madrid yet, but big things are expected of the 17-year-old who made headlines around the world when his £38 million move to the Spanish champions was confirmed in May. That announcement came only 11 days after his professional debut for Flamengo, where the teenager will remain for the next year. A left-sided forward, Vinicius first caught the eye with his dazzling performances in the Brazil youth ranks. He scored six goals in the Under-15s' South American Championship victory in 2015, and followed up that success with seven goals as the U17s claimed the South American Championship in March this year. It was that breakthrough that prompted Real Madrid to make their move, and the club now look forward to welcoming a hugely promising young talent. With skill, pace and flair reminiscent of Neymar in his early days at Santos, Vinicius could be the superstar to lead Madrid in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era.
Jesus Vallejo
With Sergio Ramos turning 34 in 2020 and speculation persisting about Raphael Varane's long-term future in the Spanish capital, young centre-back Vallejo could force his way into Real Madrid's first-team plans. The 20-year-old has already made four appearances under Zinedine Zidane this season, earning a red card on his debut against minnows CF Fuenlabrada in the Copa del Rey. After joining Madrid from Real Zaragoza in 2015, Vallejo continued his development away from the club, spending the last two years out on loan and impressing in Germany at Eintracht Frankfurt last season. A composed, versatile defender, Vallejo reads the game well and looks certain to add to his senior appearances along with his 14 caps for Spain U21s.
Fede Valverde
You might have heard of Valverde in the summer, when he courted controversy with what many believed to be a racist gesture after scoring for Uruguay at the U20 World Cup in South Korea. The 19-year-old apologised for his actions and has since kept his head down on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, where he has made 15 appearances so far. Real Madrid snapped Valverde up from Penarol in 2016 and he became a regular in the Castilla midfield last season, encouraging hopes that he could soon progress to the first team. Complementing his careful distribution with an eye for goal, Valverde has already won three senior caps for Uruguay and scored on his debut in September in a World Cup qualifier away to Paraguay.
Barcelona
Carles Alena
If you're wondering just how highly Barcelona rate Alena, in September they extended his contract by a further three years that will see a €75m buyout clause kick in if he establishes himself in the first team. The 19-year-old midfielder has been at the club since the age of 7 and made his senior debut in November 2016, announcing himself with a 35-yard thunderbolt in a Copa del Rey clash away to Hercules. Described as the next Andres Iniesta, which is no little pressure to put on the teenager's shoulders, Alena prefers to play on the right of the midfield three and cut inside on his favoured left foot. With quick feet and the ability to find his teammates' runs with perfectly weighted passes, the Spain Under-19 international is now aiming to impress for Barcelona B in the Segunda Division and build on his six first-team appearances.
Abel Ruiz
Ruiz has been making headlines in Spain with his eye-catching displays for the U17 side and boasts the double honour of amassing the most caps and most goals for his country at that age level. Six of his 25 strikes for the U17s came at the World Cup in the summer, where the striker scored a brace against Niger in the group stage and followed up with vital goals in each knockout round on Spain's route to the final. After moving to Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, Ruiz has progressed through the youth ranks to join up with the B team this season. There have been rumours in Spain of Premier League interest in the youngster, but with sharp movement in the final third and lethal finishing ability, Barcelona have high hopes for a player who doesn't turn 18 until January.
Marc Cucurella
With a mop of hair reminiscent of Carles Puyol, it's easy to spot Cucurella on the pitch. But the left-back stands out most for his composure on the ball and driving runs down the wing, which have led to him being courted by the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton. A speedy and tenacious defender, the 19-year-old starred in Barcelona's run to the UEFA Youth League semifinals last season -- where they were surprisingly beaten by eventual winners Red Bull Salzburg -- and also helped Barcelona B win promotion to the Segunda Division. With some fans regarding him as a more able deputy to Jordi Alba than Lucas Digne, Cucurella's performances earned him senior recognition in October when he made his debut for the first team in the Copa del Rey.
