Lukasz Piszczek signs Borussia Dortmund contract extension

Lukasz Piszczek has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Borussia Dortmund until 2019.

Piszczek joined BVB from then-relegated Hertha Berlin in 2010, and -- alongside his Poland teammates Jakub Blazczykowski and Robert Lewandowski -- became a key member of the Dortmund team that won two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final earlier this decade.

"'Piszczu' is an exemplary professional and thus also a role model for our young players," BVB sporting director Michael Zorc said in an official club statement. "He has turned himself into a highly regarded leader both on and off the pitch during his time at BVB."

The Poland international's old deal was due to expire in 2018, but following a strong season for Dortmund it was never in doubt that BVB would try to keep the defender at the club.

"I am honestly proud of playing in black and yellow and in front of those unbelievable fans for at least two more years," Piszczek said.

The 31-year-old has played in 176 Bundesliga games for Dortmund, scored 14 goals and set up a further 32.
