Augustin Eguavoen has resigned as head coach of Sunshine Stars, the Nigeria Professional Football League club confirmed on their Twitter handle on Friday afternoon.
The former Nigeria international spent 45 days on the job following his appointment on 25 April 2017.
Speculation had been rife about the coach's future following another controversial league loss at home to leaders Plateau United on Wednesday in Akure, a defeat which saw the club drop to 17th.
"Our management has received and accepted the disengagement notice of Coach Austin Eguavoen," read a statement on the club's Twitter handle read. "The club appreciates the coach for his time with us.
"The club wishes Austin Eguavoen the best for the future," it continued. "In view of the development the management has appointed former assistant coach, Akin Olowookere as the Interim Head Coach.
"The former junior international will be assisted by Coach Ogunderu Boye. The appointment takes immediate effect."
Speaking to Brilla FM in the aftermath of last Sunday's away loss to Shooting Stars, Eguavoen hinted that he would leave his post if officiating didn't improve, with the referee ruling out a legitimate goal scored by his side.
However, on Wednesday, Stars were denied when Plateau United's Emeka Umeh scored a late winner using his left arm to guide a throw-in beyond the home side's keeper.
In his five games at the helm of Sunshine Stars, Eguavoen took two wins from five matches.
He defeated Enugu Rangers and Enyimba at home, while losing to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, and falling to Lobi Stars and Plateau United at home.
