Newcastle United, West Ham United and Valencia are all trying to complete a move for Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala before the transfer window closes, sources have told ESPN FC.
The French defender is available after City completed a club-record £57 million deal for Athletic Bilbao centre back Aymeric Laporte.
Mangala spent last season on loan at Valencia and Pep Guardiola appeared to rule out the possibility of the 26-year-old leaving in the January transfer window.
However, sources said he could leave before Wednesday's end of the window either on loan or in a permanent deal.
City are also close to signing another defender, 20-year-old Phillippe Sandler from PEC Zwolle, although he is expected to remain with the Dutch club until the end of the season.
Mangala has made just 10 starts this season, despite injuries to captain Vincent Kompany and John Stones.
The 26-year-old joined from Porto in 2014 but has struggled throughout his time at the Etihad Stadium, making just 79 appearances in three-and-a-half years.
