Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko were made to pay the penalty in the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday as their spotkick failings in the first leg came back to haunt them as they crashed out against CARA Brazzaville.
The Ghana Premier League's other representatives in Africa, Aduana Stars, are through to the next round of the CAF Champions League after defeating Al Tahaddy SC 2-0.
Asante Kotoko missed three penalties in front of their own fans in the first leg, but still ran out 1-0 winners after netting a fourth spotkick.
However, their narrow lead was undone after 38 minutes when Richy Ondongo levelled the tie for the hosts.
With neither side able to find the net, the contest went to penalties, with CARA, who also missed from the spot during the first leg, winning 7-6 following a mammoth shootout. Jackson Owusu, Obed Owusu , Amos Frimpong and Kwame Boahene all missed from the spot, before Chansel Massa stepped up to slot home the winning penalty and send the Ghanaian heavyweights crashing out.
It capped off a superb display by Massa, who had also saved two penalty kicks in the first leg in Kumasi.
Meanwhile, in Dormaa Ahenkro, Ghana's champions Aduana Stars overturned a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to advance 2-1 on aggregate.
Elvis Opoku and Derek Sasraku each found the net to set up a First Round clash with ES Setif of Algeria.
