Schalke confirm Max Meyer to leave on free transfer in summer

Germany international Max Meyer will leave Schalke on a free transfer, club's sporting executive Christian Heidel has confirmed.

Following the transfers of Joel Matip to Liverpool and Sead Kolasinac to Arsenal in the past two summers, Meyer, 22, will leave the club in the summer.

"Transfers are part of football," Heidel told a news conference in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday. "We will not make him a new offer, but there will be no bad blood."

Meyer, who has been linked with Tottenham, has made 192 competitive appearances for Schalke since making his debut in the 2012-13 season. He has won four caps for Germany, and he played in 24 matches for the Germany under-21 team.

After initially playing in a more attacking role, current Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco turned Meyer into a holding midfielder this season. But following a good start, he found his playing time limited in recent weeks.

Contract talks collapsed earlier this year after Meyer rejected several Schalke offers.
