MEXICO CITY -- Hector Moreno, Andres Guardado and Diego Reyes will not be available for Mexico against Scotland on Saturday and all face a race to be fit for the World Cup.
Moreno suffered a blow to his left calf and was advised to rest, while Guardado had surgery on his peroneal nerve on May 17. Diego Reyes reportedly has a right hamstring injury.
"For tomorrow's game, none of the three will be ready, it's the decisions of the medical department," Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said in Friday's pregame news conference. "The rehabilitation period has been extended by a week extra and we hope that all three will be ready for [the June 9 friendly against Denmark in] Copenhagen."
Mexico will travel on Sunday evening to Denmark with a 25-player squad, Osorio confirmed, in a bid to give Guardado, Moreno and Reyes the maximum possible time to recover.
"The idea to to take two more players, precisely because of the injuries," said the Colombian. "Because nobody can guarantee that the three will be there ... the decision has been taken to take two more players."
Osorio acknowledged that if Mexico's opening game against Germany was on Saturday, four starting players would be different than in the plan he had originally formulated for the game in early April.
"I have to say that I have documents from April 5 and April 7 in which we had already decided the XI against Germany," he stated. "And because of the injuries, there are four out; it's changed and a lot."
Mexico has already suffered one injury blow ahead of the World Cup, with center-back Nestor Araujo missing out because of a knee problem.
Tickets have sold out for Mexico's farewell friendly ahead of the World Cup against Scotland, with over 70,000 expected in Estadio Azteca.
