Williams back in Socceroos frame after horror injury run

Rhys Williams says he's primed to end five years in the Socceroos wilderness.

Williams is among the 24-strong Socceroos squad which has arrived in South Korea ahead of next Friday's friendly.

For Williams in particular, the training camp and fixture against the Koreans hold extra significance: He was last in the Socceroos frame in 2013.

He then tore an Achilles tendon, which ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup and pre-empted a horror stretch of injuries.

"I rushed it to get back and then ended up being out for two years with different injuries," Williams said.

"Now, I have been playing consistently for the last few years which is good.

"I have played 30-odd games this year and I feel like I know my body a lot better and I'm ready to go."

Williams spent two seasons in the A-League at Perth Glory then Melbourne Victory before joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah in 2018.

Making his return to Socceroos camp even sweeter is the presence of younger brother Ryan Williams, who is in the national set-up for the first time.

The 25-year-old Ryan has been rewarded for solid form with Rotherham United in the English Championship.

The Williams brothers have never played on the same team.

"Ryan made his senior professional football debut against me when we were playing in England," said Rhys.

"So it would be nice to see his international debut as well.

"I have never been this close to him during football. To train with him and see him develop is very special."
