Burnley in talks with ex-Man United star Ruud Van Nistelrooy - source

Burnley are talking to former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy about their vacant manager's position, a source has told ESPN.

Burnley are looking for a new manager after Vincent Kompany left Turf Moor to join Bayern Munich in May.

A source has told ESPN that talks with Van Nistelrooy are ongoing, although he is not the only candidate in the frame.

Burnley, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, have also spoken to Frank Lampard and Scott Parker.

Craig Bellamy, who was Kompany's assistant, is acting as caretaker manager as they prepare for their return to Championship.

On Thursday. Burnley announced the appointment of Henrik Jensen as assistant coach. Jensen previously managed Swedish side Swedish side Kalmarr FF and also led Danish club Midtjylland on an interim basis.

A source has told ESPN that reports the club are on the brink of appointing Van Nistelrooy are wide of the mark, but the Dutchman remains a serious contender for the job.

Van Nistelrooy has been out of work since leaving PSV Eindhoven in 2023.

He spent five years as a player at United before joining Real Madrid in 2006.

Kompany spent two years at Burnley, earning promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge.

They finished 19th last season, six points adrift of safety, before Kompany was lured away by Bayern as their replacement for Thomas Tuchel.
