Euro 2024: Southgate starts Mainoo, Foden for England-Slovenia

Gareth Southgate made just one change for England's clash against Slovakia in the Euro 2024 round of 16 on Sunday, with Kobbie Mainoo replacing Conor Gallagher in the starting XI.

Mainoo replaced Gallagher at half-time in England's final Group C game against Slovenia, which ended in a goalless draw. The game against Slovakia will be the Manchester United teeanger's first start in a major tournament.

England are otherwise unchanged. Kieran Trippier starts again at left-back despite nursing a calf issue through the tournament and with Luke Shaw still unable to start.

Southgate also opted to keep Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka on the left and right wings, respectively, despite calls from some fans and pundits to play Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer in their place.

Foden spent some time away from the squad this week as he travelled back to England for the birth of his third child, although he returned to training on Friday.

England have never lost a round-of-16 game at a major tournament under Southgate. The winner of Sunday's clash will face Switzerland in the quaterfinals.
