A 46th minute Nick Woltemade own goal, off a sensational Nordi Mukiele cross gave Sunderland a well-earned 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby in nearly a decade.

The result sees them climb to seventh in the league table, with 26 points in 16 and leaves Newcastle stranded on 12th with 22 points.

Sunderland started the game with high intensity, a high press combining with constant movement allowing them to dominate the ball for large periods. Newcastle were happy to sit back and defend in an inflexible 4-5-1 shape inside their own half. They didn't trouble Aaron Ramsdale in the Newcastle goal, but they dominated every facet of the game.

They came out with that same intensity in the second half, and were rewarded a minute in. A corner was half-cleared and as Mukiele whipped a cross in from the right, Woltemade connected with a header, looking to clear it, but instead sending it smashing off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Newcastle rang in the changes soon after and looked to get Bruno Guimaraes into the game but apart from a couple of shots from distance they barely troubled Robin Roefs in the Sunderland goal. As the match wore on, Sunderland sat back and defended well -- too well for a poor Newcastle to break down on the day.
