Andy Murray came through his rain-delayed match against Tommy Robredo to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.
The British No.1 - eager to replace Roger Federer as world No.2 by reaching the final in Montreal - encountered few problems in completing his win over Spaniard Robredo, with a 6-4 7-5 victory pitting him against Gilles Muller, Luxembourg's world No.46, who needed three sets to down Gael Monfils 6-3 3-6 7-6(4).
But before that, Murray must face brother Jamie in the doubles - the first time the siblings have met in a Tour-level match.
Spanish seventh seed Rafael Nadal had earlier dispatched Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6(4) 6-3 while Kei Nishikori is now preparing for a showdown with David Goffin - a 6-4 6-4 victor against Sam Querrey - after defeating Pablo Andujar 6-3 6-3.
Nadal told the ATP Tour website: "I think it was a good match. Only one bad game in the whole match, at 5-4 on my serve in the first set. The rest was a positive match, I think.
"The conditions were not easy today. A lot of wind against a player who doesn't want to play a lot of points from the baseline, so I tried to play the points shorter, going to the net, playing with the slice. He was not an easy opponent to start against."
Third seed Stan Wawrinka is out, withdrawing hurt as he trailed in the third set of his match-up against Australian Nick Kyrgios. Wawrinka was trailing 7-6(8) 3-6 0-4 when he pulled out with a back complaint, but the match ended in controversy after the Australian launched an astonishing tirade against Wawrinka with a slur about the Swiss star's girlfriend.
Kyrgios will now face 16th seed John Isner after the American saw off wild-card Vasek Pospisil 7-6(1) 4-6 6-3.
There were some surprises on Tuesday in Canada. US Open champion Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych are both heading home following their respective losses to Bernard Tomic and Donald Young.
Jack Sock's reward for ousting 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov 5-7 7-6(5) 7-5 is a meeting with top seed Novak Djokovic, while Mikhail Youzhny and Jeremy Chardy won their matches against Gilles Simon and Leonardo Mayer to progress.
Qualifier Ernests Gulbis pulled off a 6-2 5-7 6-3 triumph over Lukas Rosol and will next face Berdych's conqueror Young.
No.10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced with a 5-7 7-6(6) 7-5 win over Roberto Batista Agut.
