Connecticut Sun's Alyssa Thomas out indefinitely after Achilles surgery

Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas underwent surgery for a torn Achilles tendon on Tuesday, the team announced Wednesday.

No timetable has been set for Thomas' return, but athletes with such injuries usually take nine months to a year to come back.

Thomas was playing overseas for USK Praha in the Czech Republic when she was injured.

The 28-year-old averaged 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game last season for the Sun, who advanced to the WNBA semifinals. In 2019, she helped lead Connecticut to the WNBA Finals, where the Sun lost in five games to Washington.

Thomas has played her entire seven-year WNBA career with the Sun, averaging 11.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

After leading Maryland to the 2014 Women's Final Four, Thomas was drafted No. 4 in the 2014 draft by the Liberty, who immediately traded her to Connecticut in a deal that sent Tina Charles to New York.
