Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi cleared to return Sunday vs. Los Angeles Sparks

PHOENIX -- Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi has been cleared to return from a fractured sternum and will suit up for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

The Mercury announced Taurasi's return on Friday, four days after she said she was "feeling good" following her being named to her fifth Olympic team.

Taurasi, 39, had a CT scan Tuesday and had to prove she was able to play 5-on-5 and take contact before doctors would clear her to play.

Sunday will be six weeks since Taurasi suffered the small fracture on May 16. It'll be her first game since May 21 -- she played in two games after the injury. She has played in just four games this season, averaging 15.8 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

The Mercury are 6-7 and have lost four of their past six games.

Taurasi has been preparing for her return the past two weeks by working out her core and lifting weights.

Taurasi, the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, is six points from becoming the first player in league history to reach 9,000 points.
