Stanford Cardinal women's basketball maps out Las Vegas schedule

No. 2 Stanford has relocated to Las Vegas to practice and play at least through Dec. 21.

The Cardinal made the move to comply with Santa Clara County's temporary, COVID-19-related ban on athletic activities that involve physical contact or take place indoors.

The games will be at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. Stanford will play UNLV on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET, then Washington on Sunday at 5 and Washington State on Tuesday at 4:30. The Cardinal were originally supposed to play the Huskies and Cougars at home this weekend.

"I would like to thank UNLV's administration and their head coach, Lindy La Rocque, for their flexibility in allowing us to use their facility and schedule Saturday's game," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said in a statement. "I would also like to thank Washington and Washington State for their understanding and willingness to travel to Las Vegas, and the Pac-12 conference for its continued support."

La Rocque, a Las Vegas native, is a former Stanford player (2008-12) and assistant coach (2017-20) who is in her first season leading UNLV.

VanDerveer is three victories away from tying Pat Summitt for most in Division I women's basketball history (1,098). The Cardinal opened the season with a 108-40 victory over Cal Poly on Nov. 25 and haven't played since.

Stanford has four other scheduled games during the Santa Clara County ban, which will last at least three weeks,. The status of the Dec. 11 game vs. UC Davis, which was to be at Stanford, is still to be determined. Then there are three Pac-12 games on the road: at Cal (Dec. 13), at USC (Dec. 19) and at UCLA (Dec. 21). At this point, there's been no announcement of any changes with those games.
