NCAA vice president Lynn Holzman on weight room at women's basketball tournament: 'We fixed it'

A day after NCAA executives apologized to women's basketball teams for a disparity in the weight-training facilities at the women's and men's NCAA tournaments, Lynn Holzman, the NCAA vice president for women's basketball, sat down with ESPN's Holly Rowe on Saturday to further discuss how the issues in San Antonio had been rectified.

"We fixed it," Holzman said at the beginning of the 10-minute interview, which is embedded in its entirety above.

Earlier Saturday, NCAA women's basketball teams were working out inside the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in an expanded and improved weight-training facility adjacent to nine practice courts. The additions included heavier weights, six squat racks, benches, resistance bands and exercise balls, with everything socially distanced. Areas alongside the practice courts are now furnished with exercise bikes, rowing machines, treadmills, yoga mats and upgraded weight equipment.

Holzman also addressed complaints regarding the food for student-athletes in San Antonio, as well as the COVID-19 testing in place.

Toward the end of the interview, Holzman said the past two days had shined a light on other areas that need to improve.

"It did pull the curtain back on some of the issues surrounding our sport," she said. "What that opened up was a conversation about where there may be disparities between women's sports and men's sports.

"I'm actually happy that this conversation has opened itself up, and I think it is really important for us to continue that conversation so that we can continue to move forward and make some differences that will support our sport."
