UConn's Caroline Ducharme in concussion protocol, Geno Auriemma sits with illness

UConn sophomore guard Caroline Ducharme will miss at least two games because she is in concussion protocol, according to the school.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma also sat out the Huskies' 80-47 win against Butler on Tuesday night because he was feeling ill. Associate head coach Chris Dailey took over in his place.

"Every other day, we get one person back and then we lose one," Dailey said of UConn's injuries and illness this season. "Then Coach isn't feeling well. It makes you tougher. It makes you stronger as a group. You don't have a choice ... you have to figure it out. I think that's what we've been doing."

Ducharme was injured in practice Monday and there is no timetable for her return, according to the school.

After the Butler game, the fifth-ranked Huskies (12-2) play Thursday at Xavier. Ducharme did not travel with the team. She had played in 12 of UConn's previous 13 games, starting four, and is averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds.

The Huskies have dealt with multiple absences this season, which guard Paige Bueckers is missing because of a knee injury. Guard Azzi Fudd is still out with a knee injury suffered Dec. 4, although she recently returned to basketball activities.

Dorka Juhász missed seven games with a broken thumb, and fellow forward Aubrey Griffin was out the past two games after testing positive for COVID-19, although she returned against Butler, scoring 15 points.

Only three Huskies -- Aaliyah Edwards, Lou Lopez Sénéchal and Ayanna Patterson -- have appeared in every game this season.

UConn announced the absence of Auriemma, who did travel to the game, about 30 minutes before tipoff. He also missed two games with illness, on Dec. 18 and 21.

Dailey is now 16-0 when filling in for Auriemma.

"When they say, 'Next person up,' that's really what we have to do," Dailey said. "I can't say enough about our players. I think everything we're going through is going to help us down the road. It's just bringing this team even closer together."
