Reigning winner Aliyah Boston of the South Carolina Gamecocks headlines the 2023 national ballot for the John R. Wooden Award given to the most outstanding player in college basketball.
The 15-player list of finalists was revealed Saturday.
Boston, who has guided the defending national champion Gamecocks to a 30-0 record in their quest to repeat, is joined on the 15-player ballot by Iowa Hawkeyes junior Caitlin Clark, as well as two players from the Stanford Cardinal, Cameron Brink and Haley Jones. Boston and Clark were recently named SEC and Big Ten player of the year, respectively, while the Virginia Tech Hokies' Elizabeth Kitley (ACC Player of the Year), Utah Utes' Alissa Pili (Pac-12 Player of the Year) and Villanova Wildcats' Maddy Siegrist (Big East Player of the Year) were also included.
Florida State Seminoles guard Ta'Niya Latson is the only freshman on the ballot. The ACC led all conferences with four selections, including Notre Dame Fighting Irish sophomore Olivia Miles and Louisville Cardinals junior guard Hailey Van Lith.
The biggest surprise was the omission of the LSU Tigers forward Angel Reese, who is averaging 23.4 points and 15.6 rebounds and is considered one of the top players in the country.
However, LSU confirmed to ESPN on Saturday that Reese is not eligible for the final 15, as she does not meet all the criteria for the Wooden Award.
That criteria is listed as follows: Candidates must be full-time students making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade-point average since enrolling in their school. They also must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; should contribute to team effort, excel in both offense and defense and should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.
The Wooden Award All-American team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA tournament, with the ultimate Wooden Award winner being named in April following the conclusion of the tournament.
