      Scunthorpe closing in on play-off spot

      Scunthorpe moved a step closer to a League One play-off spot after a slender 1-0 home win over relegation-threatened Walsall.Ryan Yates scored the game's only goal as the Iron recorded only a second win in 12 matches.Scunthorpe are now three points clear of seventh-placed Plymouth, who have a game in hand, while Walsall are just a point above the relegation zone. The visitors almost went ahead when Julien Ngoy tried his luck from distance in the opening exchanges but Matt Gilks was equal to it.Down the other end Scunthorpe dangerman Josh Morris saw a free-kick come back off a post.Luke Leahy brought a speculative save from Gilks after the restart whilst Funso Ojo came close for the hosts only to be denied by Liam Roberts.When it looked as though the game was heading for a stalemate, Scunthorpe stole victory in the 76th minute.Conor Townsend clipped the ball into the Walsall box and Yates was there to plant a header past Roberts.

        Ivan Toney nets winner as Scunthorpe replace Charlton in play-off places

        Ivan Toney struck the only goal of the game as Scunthorpe moved into the League One play-off zone at the expense of opponents Charlton at The Valley.The 1-0 win lifted the Iron up to fifth spot in the table, two points ahead of the lacklustre Addicks.The game sprung into life in the 20th minute with a save at either end, Ben Amos first denying Hakeeb Adelakun and then Iron goalkeeper Matt Gilks thwarting Nicky Ajose moments later.Scunthorpe made the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Adelakun beat the offside trap and burst clear on the right, squaring a low ball into the danger zone for Toney to tap home from six yards.Josh Morris blazed a stoppage time free-kick over the crossbar from just outside the box as Scunthorpe finished the first half strongly.Toney produced a super save from Amos five minutes after the restart when meeting Rory McArdle's free-kick and unleashing a powerful volley which the Charlton keeper did well to tip over.Jake Forster-Caskey glanced a header wide and Ajose saw a curling effort fly just over as Charlton finally began to ask some questions.Adelakun was only denied by a crucial block from Patrick Bauer and once more in the 71st minute when Amos had to save his goalbound attempt.There were late penalty appeals from the hosts as Ajose and Bauer both claimed to have been pulled back in the box within the space of 60 seconds.But both were ignored by referee Graham Salisbury and even though Ben Reeves and Tariqe Fosu went close at the death, in the end this was a far more comfortable victory than the scoreline suggests.

          Novak salvages point for Scunthorpe at Wimbledon

          Lee Novak snatched a late equaliser for Scunthorpe to seal a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon.The Dons went ahead after just four minutes as Scunthorpe failed to clear a corner and Will Nightingale rose highest to head in Harry Forrester's left-wing cross.Minutes later Forrester rattled the crossbar and Dean Parrett then saw an effort ruled out for offside.Scunthorpe enjoyed a spell of possession but failed to create any clear-cut chances, while Deji Oshilaja came within inches of converting Parrett's corner for the Dons.Both sides started the second half slowly, with Jordan Clarke's weak shot saved easily by George Long.But with just five minutes remaining, Duane Holmes burst down the left and Novak converted his low cross from close range to level with the Iron's first chance of the game.Despite intense late pressure from the visitors, Wimbledon held on to make it four games unbeaten although they remain just a point from safety in 20th.Scunthorpe are winless in 10 and fall to ninth, one point from the play-offs.

            Scunthorpe pay price for missed chances as Oxford pinch a point

            Oxford hit back to earn a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe in Karl Robinson's first home match in charge - after being given a first-half runaround.The Iron were left kicking themselves following their first League One outing since the sacking of boss Graham Alexander as they had a stack of chances to put the game to bed.Ivan Toney fired the play-off hopefuls in front after 12 minutes with his fifth goal from eight starts.Substitute Jon Obika then inspired the U's who equalised with a penalty from James Henry after 56 minutes.Scunthorpe might have gone into the break three up.Toney netted by following up a drive from Hakeeb Adelakun that goalkeeper Simon Eastwood failed to hold.Adelakun volleyed over and Eastwood saved from Josh Morris as Scunthorpe attempted to stretch their lead.Toney struck the post, while Henry and Rob Dickie blocked efforts on the goal line - and Henry looked to have used an arm.Obika was then adjudged to have been tripped by Scunthorpe's Jordan Clarke, and Henry converted the penalty into the bottom right corner.Adelakun later struck the bar for the visitors with a curling shot.

              Ivan Toney secures a share of spoils for Scunthorpe

              Scunthorpe and Rochdale battled out a 1-1 draw in a combative Sky Bet League One contest at Glanford Park.Callum Camps' long-range effort gave Dale the lead before Ivan Toney headed home an equaliser amid a much better second-half display from the hosts.Rochdale, deep in relegation trouble, settled the quicker of the two teams, with Bradden Inman volleying a good chance over the bar before Camps found the bottom corner in the 20th minute after the Iron had failed to fully clear a corner.The visitors could have been two goals to the good had Oliver Rathbone been able to make better contact with an effort at goal following Calvin Andrew's knockdown inside the box.Scunthorpe, who were booed off by the home crowd at the end of the first half, improved markedly after the break and restored parity when Tom Hopper headed a free-kick to the far post and Toney nodded home.Both sides went in search of a winner, in what proved to be a frantic final 20 minutes, but had to settle for a point.

                Patrick McEleney nets on debut as Oldham see off Scunthorpe to move to safety

                Two goals in the final 12 minutes saw Oldham climb out of the League One relegation zone with a 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe.The Latics had been on the back foot for large parts of the match, but never looked back after substitute Patrick McEleney marked his debut with a fortunate strike in the 78th minute.Fellow substitute Eoin Doyle doubled their lead four minutes later.Neither side had been able to find any fluency to their attacking play in a scrappy opening 45 minutes, with Scunthorpe creating the best two chances from which Hakeeb Adelakun was denied by Johny Placide and Josh Morris headed against the bar.The Iron seemed to have stepped up a gear after the break, only for visiting boss Richie Wellens to turn the game on its head by bringing on McEleney and Doyle just before and after the hour mark.The former broke the deadlock when Jack Byrne's shot from 20 yards spun up off the midfielder and wrong-footed home keeper Matt Gilks. Minutes later they secured all three points, with Doyle finishing clinically into the bottom corner after being played through by Aaron Holloway.

                  Ellis Harrison secures late point for Rovers

                  Ellis Harrison's injury-time goal earned Bristol Rovers a point from a 1-1 draw with League One promotion-chasers Scunthorpe at the Memorial Stadium.The striker converted Liam Sercombe's cross from the right with a low finish from inside the six-yard box to secure a result his side barely deserved.Scunthorpe took the lead when Duane Holmes stole in behind Rovers' defence after 61 minutes to sweep Funso Ojo's low ball past Adam Smith with his left foot.The visitors had gone close at the start of the second half when Ojo's shot was deflected up onto the crossbar.After Holmes' goal, Smith kept Rovers in the game with a fine save from Tom Hopper in the 71st minute.Rovers edged a forgettable first half in which neither goalkeeper had a save to make. Kyle Bennett fired over for the hosts after 13 minutes from Rory Gaffney's lay-off.

                    Iron hit back to earn point against Northampton

                    Play-off chasing Scunthorpe twice came from behind to pick up a point in a 2-2 draw with Northampton.The Cobblers took the lead against the run of play in the 13th minute when Chris Long converted at the back post after Matt Crooks had flicked on a free-kick in the box.Although the Iron rallied, they struggled for quality in the final third, until Funso Ojo found the bottom corner from 20 yards after a driving run through midfield just after the half-hour.Having got men behind the ball to frustrate the home side, the Cobblers hit Scunthorpe with a sucker punch in the 57th minute when John-Joe O'Toole powered home a header from a corner.But the Iron also underlined their threat from set-pieces with defender Murray Wallace rising highest above a scrum of players to head home his side's 76th-minute equaliser after a free-kick had spun high into the air.Buoyed by the goal, the Iron piled forward in search of a winner, but Northampton goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell preserved his side their point by brilliantly pushing away Josh Morris' late free-kick.
