Cardinals cut Brice Butler, Greg Little despite wide-open receiver room

After going to Arizona in the spring, Brice Butler couldn't meet expectations with the Cardinals.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals cut 35 players on Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here’s a closer look at the final cuts:

Most significant move: When Brice Butler signed with Arizona this past spring, he was believed to be the ideal complement and No. 2 receiver to Larry Fitzgerald. However, it was not to be. Butler didn’t live up to the expectations throughout the offseason and training camp, and it cost him. The wide receiver room was wide open this year, so it took major inconsistencies to cost Butler a roster spot.

Cards part ways with draft pick: Arizona cut its sixth-round NFL draft pick Saturday, safety Chris Campbell out of Penn State. He was the lone draft pick to be let go, while the Cardinals kept five undrafted free agents from this year’s class. Campbell came into an already crowded safety rotation that got even deeper when Tre Boston signed with Arizona. At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Campbell had the physique coach Steve Wilks likes, but he didn’t produce well enough throughout the offseason to take a roster spot away from a veteran or outplay the likes of undrafted rookies Zeke Turner and A.J. Howard, both of whom made the roster.

Little’s quest ends short: Greg Little was optimistic the Cardinals would give him an opportunity to play football again after three seasons away. While Wilks praised his performance in Thursday night’s preseason game, Little was cut this weekend, as Arizona opted to go with five receivers instead of six. Little was brought in for a tryout during rookie minicamp and then brought back during minicamp. While a roster spot would’ve been the perfect ending to a Cinderella story, the slipper didn’t fit Saturday.
