INDIANAPOLIS – Martellus Bennett's uncertain roster status is apparently low on the Chicago Bears' to-do list at the NFL combine.

General manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox both brushed off questions on Wednesday about Bennett’s murky future in Chicago, saying the organization is less concerned about players already under contract, and more focused on the upcoming draft and free agency.

“I talked to him right at the end of the season,” Pace said. “I haven’t talked to him recently. Really with him, he’s under contract. We have a lot of players that aren’t under contract, so that’s where our focus is right now.”

Bennett is under contract for one more year, but the former Pro Bowl tight end boycotted the entire voluntary offseason program in 2015 in search of a new deal that never materialized.

After publicly questioning his role, Bennett went on injured reserve on Dec. 8 with fractured ribs. He finished the season with 53 catches for 439 yards and three touchdowns.

“We recognize he’s a talented, well-rounded tight end,” Pace said. “Again, he’s under contract, so right now our focus is on guys who are out of contract. You can categorize them in two different areas and he’s in the other area right now.”

Even if the Bears refuse to admit it, they have to be concerned Bennett will again skip the offseason program if he remains on the team.

Fox, though, tried to downplay the potential distraction.

“I worry about everything, but everything changes year to year,” Fox said. “We've wiped the slate, everybody is 0-0 and that's kind of how I look at molding our football team as well. New process, it's a new challenge, and we'll see what happens moving forward. Right now they're off.”

In three seasons in Chicago, Bennett has 208 receptions for 2,114 yards and 14 touchdowns. At 28 years old, Bennett does have trade value, if the Bears decide to head that direction.
