Brett Hundley's development takes another hit, will likely miss another week of practice

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers like what they've seen from backup quarterback Brett Hundley; they just haven't seen as much as they had hoped.

That's not likely to change this week.

Although Hundley walked with barely a limp as he left the locker room Saturday, his sprained left ankle is tender enough that it will probably keep him out for another week of practice and the next preseason game.

"I think Brett will be hard-pressed to do anything this week," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "I don't see him playing against San Francisco."

Hundley reinjured his left ankle in Thursday's preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. It was his game debut as the Packers' new No. 2 quarterback after he missed two weeks of practice and the first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns because of the initial injury. He also would not have been able to play in the Hall of Fame game had it not been called off.

In his short stint, he gave the Packers no reason to think he won't be suitable backup to Rodgers. He directed a 14-play touchdown drive to open the game and then hit receiver Davante Adams on a stellar 31-yard back-shoulder fade early in the second quarter. He was injured on the same play, when Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack hit him from behind and rolled on his ankle.

"When you get back out there, it's still tender, but at the same time, hopefully nobody touches it," Hundley said. "When somebody does, it flares up. Unfortunately, it's the game of football. It's a 100 percent injury rate, unfortunately. So there's going to be things that always happen."

In a preseason in which the Packers wanted to get Hundley as much work as possible, he's taken all of 20 snaps. Still, he doesn't think it has hindered his development in a year in which he moved up from No. 3 to the top backup.

"I'm developing every day," Hundley said. "It's not that you get any less development. You're taking mental reps. You're taking everything you have to."

The best-case scenario for Hundley would be to play a lengthy stint in the preseason finale Sept. 1 at the Kansas City Chiefs. Rodgers is expected to make his preseason debut (and probably only summer appearance) against the San Francisco 49ers.

"I get a lot of the reps from mental repetition right now," said Hundley, who is 5-of-7 passing for 67 yards after leading the NFL in preseason touchdowns last summer with seven. "Obviously, Cleveland we missed, but I got maybe a quarter this game. I just have to make the most of this opportunity -- all the opportunities. Whether it's in practice, whether it's in the games, wherever it's at, you've got to make the most of it."
