Extra or Juicy Fruit: The taste that moves Brett Hundley through a game

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Hundley has almost a pack-a-game habit. Pack of gum, that is.

If there's been a trademark of the Green Bay Packers new starting quarterback, it's him chomping on a piece of gum while he plays.

In fact, Hundley brought it up unprompted during his session with reporters on Wednesday, when asked how he deals with the stress of the job.

Hundley has two preferred brands: Juicy Fruit or Extra.

"It's been Extra lately," Hundley said.

The third-year pro said he never chewed gum while playing before he got to the NFL.

"It has gotten worse and worse over these past couple of years," Hundley said of his gum habit. "I actually started because I used to wear a mouthpiece and they don't wear mouthpieces here I guess, so I didn't wear a mouthpiece. I threw some gum in, and it stuck."

No pun intended.

He said he typically goes through six pieces a game.

"Usually it's like three pieces in the first half, three pieces in the second half," Hundley said.

Hundley added that he's not like Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who he called a "really hard gum chewer."

"I'm not there yet," Hundley said. "I hope I don't get there."

Hundley thought it was unusual that Packers quarterbacks don't wear mouthpieces, but Rodgers doesn't and neither did Brett Favre before him.

The gum chewing, however, is usual, even to his teammates.

Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix said he noticed Hundley's gum chewing right away.

"He looks a lot more calm smacking his gum," Clinton-Dix said. "He's smacking it, too. He's getting every little juice out of that."

But it doesn't appear to be something that will catch on. When asked whether he will stick with his mouthpiece, Clinton-Dix said: "Hell yeah."
