A recap of where the New York Giants stand as they head into their matchup Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles:
Eli Manning remains the starting quarterback, not only for this week but likely for the remainder of the regular season. The Giants play in Arizona and host the Washington Redskins the final two weeks.
"Eli Manning is the starting quarterback and I don't feel that changing, but I don't know what next week is going to bring," interim coach and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said earlier this week.
The plan two weeks ago was for the Giants to get rookie quarterback Davis Webb into the lineup at some point, potentially as early as last week against the Dallas Cowboys. A lot has changed since then, including the job status of coach Ben McAdoo. He was fired and the plan was scrapped.
Webb remains the third-string quarterback. He will be inactive Sunday against the Eagles for the 14th consecutive game.
"That's the plan right now as we are here today on Wednesday, December 13," Spagnuolo said. "That would be the plan."
Webb, a third-round pick, has not seen a change in his role or practice reps. John Mara told reporters at the owners' meetings that he likes to leave those playing-time decisions up to the coaches.
This doesn't seem to bode well for Webb to play this season. As the interim coach, Spagnuolo doesn't have much incentive to turn to the rookie.
Second-year cornerback Eli Apple is no longer on the injury report. He still might be in the doghouse, though.
Spagnuolo wouldn't commit to the 2016 top-10 pick being active Sunday against the Eagles. Apple has been inactive the past four games for a variety of reasons, ranging from missing practice as he attended to a personal matter to injury to lack of practice reps.
"Practiced [Wednesday] -- not with the starting group, but got reps in there," Spagnuolo said. "Worked with the scout team. He did some special teams reps, so we're kind of getting him, trying to oil him back up. We'll see where he is at the end of the week.
"At the end, you got to make a decision on 46 players, so that'll all unfold as the week goes."
It's not all that encouraging, especially after the Giants were disappointed that Apple was tweeting during last week's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He's expected to be disciplined in some form.
But Spagnuolo insists at some point he does want to get Apple back on the field. When that will be seems less certain. It might not be this week.
"At some point, we got to do that," Spagnuolo said. "That's the goal."
Safety Landon Collins (ankle) didn't practice Wednesday. He wants to play against the Eagles, and says he will play against the Eagles.
The Giants aren't so certain. Spagnuolo again mentioned saving Collins from himself on Wednesday.
Offensive lineman Justin Pugh (back), defensive tackle Damon Harrison (not injury related) and wide receiver Roger Lewis (ankle) also didn't practice Wednesday.
