Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy open as co-favorites to win Open Championship

Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy have opened as co-favorites to win the Open Championship at St. Andrews Golf Club.

On Monday, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook posted Spieth and McIlroy at 5-1 for the season's third major, which tees off July 16 on ESPN. Dustin Johnson is next at 15-1, followed by Justin Rose and Adam Scott at 20-1.

Spieth won his second straight major, outlasting Johnson and the field in the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Spieth finished at 5 under, one shot better than Johnson, who missed a 12-foot putt for eagle on No. 18 that would have won the tournament. He wound up three-putting. McIlroy finished at even par.

Spieth heads to the venerable Old Course at St. Andrews trying to keep his chances of the Grand Slam alive. He was listed at 150-1 to win all four majors at the SuperBook before the U.S. Open.

"We took a few hundred [dollars] on him at 150-1 last week," SuperBook assistant manager Jeff Sherman told ESPN Chalk.

Spieth is now 25-1 to complete the Grand Slam with wins at St. Andrews and at the PGA Championship in August at Whistling Straits. And he is becoming a consistent threat to Vegas books.

He closed at around 8-1 to win the U.S. Open, the second-favorite behind McIlroy.

"We lost a little with Spieth," Sherman said. "[We] would have won the same amount if Johnson won."

A daily fantasy sports contestant lost more than a little on the dramatic finish. Heading to No. 18, a contestant with the screen name "headchopper" was leading DraftKings' $1 million U.S. Open event with Johnson as his top guy. If Johnson would have made his 12-foot eagle putt, "headchopper" would have won, according to the site. When Johnson three-putted, first-time participant "carlbassewitz" moved into first place and won the $1 million. Second place paid $100,000.

A long shot got into the mix, adding more drama to Sunday's final round. Louis Oosthuizen was listed at 1,000-1 to win the U.S. Open after shooting a first-round 77. He shot 29 on the back nine Sunday and was tied for the lead at 4 under with Spieth and Johnson headed to No. 18. Spieth's birdie on 18 ended Oosthuizen's chances.

Phil Mickelson is 30-1 and Tiger Woods 60-1 to win the Open Championship.
