Kyle Allen named Texas A&M starting QB for regular-season opener

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin announced on Monday that sophomore Kyle Allen will serve as the team's starting quarterback for the season opener against No. 15 Arizona State.

Allen was engaged in a battle for the starting job with true freshman and five-star recruit Kyler Murray and junior college signee Jake Hubenak, both new arrivals for the Aggies this offseason.

Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital made it clear prior to training camp, which began two weeks ago, that all three would have an opportunity to compete for the starting job.

Murray, with his 42-0 record and three state championships at Texas high school football's highest classification, was considered the top contender to Allen, who started the Aggies' final five games last season.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Allen earned offensive MVP honors in Texas A&M's win over West Virginia in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl to conclude the 2014 season. He was 3-2 as a starter -- a record that included a road win at Auburn -- and finished the season by completing 118-of-192 passes for 1,322 yards and 16 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Allen, who hails from Scottsdale, Arizona, will lead the Aggies against the Sun Devils in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sept. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
