Riot Games hires Angela Roseboro as chief diversity officer

Six months after being accused of allowing a culture of sexism and misogyny, Riot Games has hired its first chief diversity officer.

Angela Roseboro will serve as the leader of the organization's diversity, inclusion and "Riot culture," according to a news release from the company. She will be charged with leading all diversity and inclusion programs and creating new ones to build a more inclusive culture at Riot.

Earlier this week, Riot launched an "information hub" to lay out its beliefs about creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace and organization. It included a mission of calling out "sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, religious discrimination, and bigotry of all kinds."

"I can't wait to get started and to do my part to make sure we have a culture that embraces the uniqueness of every Rioter and a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging," Roseboro said.

Roseboro most recently worked at Dropbox, where she was the global head of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Her hiring comes in response to allegations that were reported in August about rampant sexism within the company as multiple then-current and former employees described examples of sexism and misogyny at a variety of levels.

Among the accusations leveled at the company were that female employees were talked over and their ideas dismissed, despite the same ideas being accepted when later proposed by male colleagues, and that they also were passed up for promotion in favor of male candidates with less experience.

It also was reported that female employees were more rigorously quizzed to prove that they were "gamers" -- a label that Riot deemed integral for employees to identify with and which was defined according to what Riot deemed "real games."

The Aug. 7 report by video game website/blog Kotaku was corroborated by further stories.

Riot issued a subsequent statement that read: "As a company, we're used to patching problems ASAP, but this patch will not happen overnight. We will weave this change into our cultural DNA and leave no room for sexism or misogyny. Inclusivity, diversity, respect, and equality are all non-negotiable. While there is much to improve, there is a tremendous amount of good at Riot that will drive this change. This is our top priority until we get it right."

Riot Games is best known for its "League of Legends" multiplayer online battle arena video game.
