Invictus Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix booked their spots Saturday in the semifinals of the League of Legends World Championship.
Invictus defeated Griffin 3-1 in the best-of-five series, and South Korea's Kang "TheShy" Seun-kok earned MVP honors. Invictus won the first two maps to get off to a hot start but dropped the third and roared back to win the fourth to wrap up the series.
They will next face FunPlus Phoenix, who took a similar path to the semis vs. Fnatic. After cruising out to a 2-0 lead, FPX opened the door with a third-game loss to Fnatic before rallying to win the fourth game and take the series 3-1. South Korea's Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang of FPX was named MVP.
Sunday's quarterfinal matchups feature Damwon Gaming vs. G2 Esports followed by T1 vs. Splyce.
The LoL event began with 16 teams divided into four groups for a double round robin of single-game matches. The top two teams in each group advanced to the best-of-five quarterfinals, which run Oct. 26-27 in Madrid, Spain.
The best-of-five semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 2-3 in Madrid, with the best-of-five final to be held Nov. 10 in Paris. The championship team will receive 37.5 percent of the prize pool, set at a minimum of $2,225,000. The runner-up will get 13.5 percent of the prize pool.
