Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Tristan Wirfs did not report Tuesday for the start of the club's voluntary organized team activities and, as a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday, doesn't plan to in the immediate future.
The three-time Pro Bowl selection is seeking a long-term contract and does not want to risk injury, the source said, and the sides have not made enough progress on a deal.
Coach Todd Bowles, who watched Tuesday's OTA workout from a golf cart as he recovers from left knee replacement surgery, did not directly answer a question about whether Wirfs' absence was related to the status of talks aimed at a contract extension.
"I'm aware that it's voluntary and me and Tristan had a conversation, we've had plenty of conversations," Bowles said. "He's been here all offseason, so I'm comfortable with that."
Wirfs, drafted 13th overall by the Buccaneers in 2020, is set to play this season on the fifth-year option in his rookie contract, worth $18.244 million fully guaranteed.
General manager Jason Licht reiterated this week that the Bucs remain committed to rewarding Wirfs, a Pro Bowl selection in his first season as a left tackle, with a long-term extension.
"It was a big puzzle this year of how to fit it all in," Licht said Monday during a news conference to announce Winfield's new contract. "Hopefully we can finish this off."
The Buccaneers have spent big this offseason to retain their key free agents. Antoine Winfield Jr. was the latest to cash in, signing a four-year, $84.1 million contract after receiving the franchise tag. Quarterback Baker Mayfield (three years, $100 million), wide receiver Mike Evans (two years, $41 million) and linebacker Lavonte David (one year, $8.5 million) also re-signed with Tampa Bay this offseason.
The Buccaneers are still in the voluntary portion of their offseason program. Attendance isn't mandatory until minicamp next month.
